Trinomials Where A=1

  • When factoring trinomials that are equal to 1, you can use Reverse FOIL and c>0 and Reverse FOIL and c<0.
    • Reverse FOIL and c>0
      • To reverse FOIL, find two numbers whose product is c and sum is b. If c is positive, the signs in the two binomials have to stay the same.
        • Example:x2+10x+24
          • Find Factors of 24: 6*4, 2*12, 24*1, 8*3
          • Factor: (x+6)(x+4)
    • Reverse FOIL and c<0
      • To reverse FOIL here, find two numbers whose product is c and sum is b. If the c is negative, the binomial signs have to be different.
        • Example: x2+x-6
          • Find factors of -6: -3*2, 3*-2, -6*1, 6*-1
          • Factor: (x+3)(x-2)
