Trinomials Where A=1
When factoring trinomials that are equal to 1, you can use
Reverse FOIL and c>0
and
Reverse FOIL and c<0.
Reverse FOIL and c>0
To reverse FOIL, find two numbers whose product is c and sum is b. If c is
positive
, the signs in the two binomials
have to stay the same.
Example:x
2
+10x+24
Find Factors of 24: 6*4, 2*12, 24*1, 8*3
Factor:
(x+6)(x+4)
Reverse FOIL and c<0
To reverse FOIL here, find two numbers whose product is c and sum is b. If the c is
negative
, the binomial signs
have to be different.
Example: x
2
+x-6
Find factors of -6: -3*2, 3*-2, -6*1, 6*-1
Factor:
(x+3)(x-2)
